Grant Description

A previous NWO-WOTRO project developed agronomic practices that currently allow farmers in Benin to produce dye sorghum crops on a commercial scale.

This initiated the export of leaf sheaths of dye sorghum to Europe, as well as the production of important quantities of dye sorghum grain at a price that is relatively low compared to ordinary food sorghum grain.

In this previous project, we developed an innovative brewing process that transforms dye sorghum grain into a typical low-alcohol lager beer. The current project aims to improve the brewing process of dye sorghum beer to enable upscaling.

Promotion of the use of dye grain for beer production will allow farmers to make their farming business more profitable, contributing to their livelihoods.
