Aquaponics is social inclusive, resource efficient nutrition production system.
The proposed project builds on the previously funded NWO-WOTRO project ’ which resulted on efficient business model that achieved 14% profit, enhanced dietary diversity, a technically feasible aquaponics system, with 50 kg of fish per cycle and 1500 plants production.
The project identified that the major expense of aquaponics operation is fish feed of which 65% goes to fishmeal which is inaccessibility in Ethiopia.
It is possible to enhance the aforementioned project achievements from Aquaponics by enhancing the fish diet quality, access and cost using locally available ingredients.
This project plans to enhance the productivity and profitability of ‘women operated aquaponics’ through formulation of accessible aquaponics diet by replacing fish meal by insect larvae and mineralizing with plant specific minerals.
The project plan to develop technical and business guide for insect larvae based aquaponics diet to enhance the sustainability.
