To provide appropriate facilities for preserving recently recovered manuscripts, books, religious items, personal possessions and theatrical costumes.
In the 1930's Buddhist monks buried these priceless pieces of cultural heritage in the Gobi desert to prevent their destruction during the Repression period.
In the 1990's, after the dismantling of the Soviet Union, the political situation was stable enough to dig up the chests. The items need urgent care to ensure their survival after being re-exposed to oxygen and other climatic conditions.
