In 2005, the Government of China donated $541,389 to the World Health Organization (WHO) for emergency health services in Aceh and North Sumatra in response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
According to the WHO the aim of this project was to "organize public health campaigns for the prevention of disease outbreaks and for the treatment of prevalent diseases such as diarrhea, ARI, insect-borne diseases, and vaccine-preventable diseases through disease surveillance, organization of immunization campaigns, provision of treatment, and public health education." Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.
