Chinese Government provided $500,000 to Tonga for emergency relief after Tropical Cyclone Gita (linked to Record ID#63570, #63571)

On 6 March, 2018, Charge D’affaires of the Chinese Embassy to Tonga Chen Tie and Hon.

Minister for Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Communication and Climate Change of Tonga Poasi Tei, signed the Handover Certificate of Cash Grant (translation: 中国对汤加现汇援助交接证书) on behalf of respective governments. Earlier, the Kingdom of Tonga was struck by the severe cyclone Gita on February 12, 2018.

To help Tonga counter the disaster, the Chinese Government has decided to provide 500,000 U.S. dollars of emergency humanitarian assistance by remittance to the Tongan Government. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
