On December 20, 2017, delegates from China Road & Bridge Corporation (CRBC) signed memorandums of understanding with the Egyptian Ministry of Transportation to conduct studies and designs to develop new multipurpose terminals in Safaga Port, among others in the Red Sea.
According to the Ministry of Transportation, the new port terminals will be able to handle containers and general goods by increasing the annual capacity for trading containers in Safaga Port to 1.2 million containers. The project will also help to redirect traffic to Safaga port, thus reducing the load on Upper Egypt road network.
The Safaga Port project is expected to cost USD $400,000,000. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
