In January 2017, the Chinese Government provided a $6 million grant to the Government of Mozambique’s Ministry of Transportation to build a “workshop” (or repair center) for buses in Matola.
The workshop covers 20,000 square meters of land and includes offices, warehouses for spare parts, an area for washing buses, and a station for treating waste water. The workshop is reportedly able to repair 2,500 buses per year. The purpose of this project was to improve the quality and safety of public transportation in Mozambique.
Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
