In 2005, the Chinese Government granted 3 million USD to the Government of Jamaica to construct a multi-purpose stadium in Sligoville, St Catherine. The Stadium consists of a 600-seat basketball and netball court, with lighting facilities and fences.
It also has a 1200-seat cricket oval, a 1500-seat football field and a six-lane, 400-meter track circling the football field.
According to the Chinese Embassy, the Complex, to be built by China Shanxi Engineering Group, was expected to serve the local people not only as a world standard training base but also a catering and sporting venue for both students and residents.
The ground-breaking ceremony of the Sligoville Sports Complex was held in Sligoville, Jamaica on March 15, 2006, and was completed in May 2007. However, according to the Jamaica Observer, by 2013 the stadium laid in ruin. According to RJR News, in 2014 the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education & Sport bought the Sligoville Sports Complex.
Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
