Grant Description

On December 19, 2003, the government of China granted EC$6.5 million to St. Lucia for the construction of a 104-bed psychiatric hospital in Le Perle.

The construction was expected to begin in November 2005, but according to the Chinese Embassy source, actually began on April 3, 2006. The total cost of construction is EC$27 million, according to the WHO source. According to the 2005 press statement from the government of St.

Lucia, the Chinese state-owned Anhui Foreign Economic Construction Group signed the construction contract in September 2005, following a presentation of the project design to health officials in August 2005. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
