Grant Description

In October 2016, former Chinese ambassador to Namibia Ji Peiding said China will donate 4,000 tons of rice valued at 60 million Namibia dollars (4 million U.S. dollars) to aid over 6,000 Namibians. Namibia had been facing a severe drought that had been going on for three years. The rice began arriving in December 2016, and finished by April 2017.

This led Namibian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to call China a true friend of developing countries and invited Chinese businesses to forge joint ventures with Namibian companies.

Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Zhang Ming and Namibian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah were present at the signing ceremony. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
