Grant Description

On 22 November 2015, the Government of the People’s Republic of China signed an ETCA to provide Tonga with a grant aid of RMB 120,000,000 to support the sports and agricultural sector.

The aid would be used to supplement funding for two major ongoing development projects through the Agriculture Technical Cooperation, as well as the Tonga Sports Gymnasium project (Also known as Tonga High School Phase II).

The sports facilities were planned to be used for the 2019 Pacific Games hosted in Tonga, however Tonga withdrew their decision to host the games in 2017, and no construction on the High School has taken place. The breakdown between the various projects is unknown. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
