On October 1, 2008, an agreement was signed between the governments of PNG and China for a Chinese medical team to work at the Port Moresby General Hospital (PMGH) under a two-year exchange program.
Minister for Health and HIV/AIDS Sasa Zibe signed the agreement with Chinese Ambassador to PNG Wei Ruixing in Port Moresby in the presence of Health Secretary Dr Clement Malau, PMGH chief executive officer Dr. Alphonse Tay and delegates from the Chinese embassy. The 10 person team would include eight doctors, an interpreter and a chef.
The team of doctors included a neurosurgeon, anesthetist, pathologist, obstetrician and gynecologist, dentistry surgeon, oncologist, acupuncturist and a cardiologist. During their visit, the team would provide equipment and drugs for the hospital. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.
Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
