On May 15, 2019, according to press release from the Embassy of the People's Republic of China in the Kingdom of Tonga, China granted 500 HAIER air conditioning systems, 27,561 LED lights, and 1500 solar-powered street lamps valued at 15 million RMB.
Yang Zhaohui and the acting Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Tourism and Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tonga Sika jointly signed a donation certificate for the solar street lamp donation.
The devices were a joint donation by the People's Government of Dongguan City, Guangdong Province, China, and the National Development and Reform Commission of China, to provide energy-efficient appliances to combat climate change.
The donation was part of an aid package promised at the end of December 2014, which also included 30 vehicles to Tonga for coronation of King Tupou VI (see #37779) and 100 million RMB of gratis aid (see #37781). Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.
Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
