Hanban completes Confucius Institute at the University of Costa Rica

On November 17, 2008, the University of Costa Rica and the Confucius Institute Headquarters signed a cooperation agreement for the establishment for the establishment of the Confucius Institute at the University of Costa Rica. The agreement had a validity period of five years. The Institute will facilitate Chinese language instruction and promote Chinese-Costa Rican relations.

To establish the Institute, the University of Costa Rica intended to open a designated account in a local bank using USD $50,000 to $100,000 provided by China.

Hanban also agreed to provide 3,000 volumes of books and multimedia materials and to send one or two Chinese instructors to teach at the Institute. The project will be jointly funded by Hanban and the University of Costa Rica. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve.

Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
