The University of Liverpool will work with the Wellcome Trust to build a translational infrastructure to support local University and NHS staff that facilitates expansion and exploitation of existing and new programmes of research to help address the major health issues of the City region.
There are 3 key Objectives: - Provision of ready access to new high quality expertise from senior experts with experience of successful development of translational programmes. - Provision of substantial and readily accessible pump-priming funding to initiate and develop an increased number of translational projects. - Provision of novel training for clinical and non-clinical staff that is embedded in core education to provide increased critical mass and a translational culture in the University and NHS partners.
Specifically this will involve development of: (i) an extended pump priming/seed funding scheme to develop translational projects, (ii) appointment of local specialist support to promote and enhance bids to key translational funders, (iii) improved availability of expertise for University and NHS staff through appointment of a Commercial Champion in Residence and establishing a full-time Professor of Translational Science, and (iv) education of the next generation of clinical and non-clinical researchers to develop critical mass and future translational leaders.
