This proposal outlines a visiting researcher programme for Professor Gasto Frumence from Muhimbili University, Tanzania, to the Department of Epidemiology and Global Health at Umeå University.
The programme aims to deepen collaboration in health systems research by focusing on mutual learning and expanding the depth and scope of existing partnerships.Professor Frumence, an expert in health systems governance, brings extensive experience in managing health services in low-resource settings, decentralising services and prioritising care for vulnerable populations.
His visit provides an opportunity to strengthen the exchange of knowledge and practices between a high-income country (Sweden) and a low-income country (Tanzania), addressing common challenges such as health service delivery in remote areas and human resource management. The four-month programme is research intensive.
During the first month, Prof.
Frumence will integrate into the research environment at Umeå University, give lectures on health system governance and lead seminars on health service decentralisation.
The second month will focus on joint workshops, including a workshop on human resources for health and revisions to the PhD and MPH programmes to include diverse case studies and challenges from both countries.During the third month, Prof Frumence will work with Swedish researchers to further develop a new journal and plan future research initiatives and grant applications.
The final month will focus on synthesising findings and planning future directions, including a workshop on community health systems and strategic meetings to outline future projects, funding opportunities and expanded exchange programmes. This programme represents an important step forward in the partnership between Umeå University and Muhimbili University, promoting a balanced, reciprocal approach to health systems research.
