The Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) fosters the next generation of research leaders to conduct ground-breaking research in infection medicine.
MIMS is the Swedish node of a Nordic Partnership with the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Europe´s flagship institute for the life sciences.
MIMS has a strong track record of bringing talented group leaders from the EMBL network and other international centres of excellence to Sweden, where they are offered generous long-term funding, mentorship, a stimulating and supportive research environment and state-of-the-art core facilities to tackle important research questions.
MIMS scientists study viruses, bacteria, parasites and immune systems.
They use structural and chemical biology, genomics and genetics to understand host-pathogen interactions, and to discover antibiotics and drug resistance mechanisms.
Research on CRISPR/Cas9 by former MIMS Group Leader Emmanuelle Charpentier was awarded the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
To bridge the gap between basic and clinical research, MIMS has created a national network of Clinical Research Fellows.
Hosted at Umeå University, MIMS has developed a national impact through international recruitment, training and European networking.
The operational plan for the next quinquennium seeks to evolve and update the research agenda and membership of MIMS and to further strengthen its national role through a programme of Young Investigators from all over Sweden.
