Urban Green Elements can modulate bioaerosol diversity and influence health effects related to air quality.
AirBiD will study how Nature-based solutions (NBS) in urban zones like urban protected ecosystems, green roofing, green walls, and wild urban gardens, influence the abundance and diversity of bioaerosols (pollen, fungal spores, and bacteria) that impact human health. Airborne samples will be collected at different NBSs of selected target cities, involving scientists and citizens.
AirBiD will search for specific species using state-of-the-art DNA techniques, complemented by light microscopy qualitative and quantitative analyses.
AirBiD will assess air biodiversity in existing protected ecosystems, produce an index for biodiversity, and map it at the urban/suburban level, using aerobiological approaches.
AirBiD will suggest methods to maintain and improve airborne biodiversity in such ecosystems and develop recommendations for managing and constructing sustainable nature-based solutions, enhancing positive effects on human well-being.
Finally, AirBiD will develop guidance using local language and infographics sharing information on how citizens and stakeholders can valorize the positive impact of urban nature-based solutions in countries not involved in this project.
This outreach will be started by communicating the protocols within the EU network ADOPT, currently involving 38 countries and 132 partners, scientific and stakeholders.
