Ecocide refers to the destruction of large areas of the natural environment by human activity, therefore its recognition as an international crime could have significant implications for environmental sustainability and global justice.
This project will study the relationship between ecocide and the complex system of environmental protection and policy, particularly in the context of the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian war.
It is an illustrative case to pose the arguments of pro et contra for including ecocide in international law, and what it would entail both for international law and environmental sustainability.
The project examines the potential role of ecocide in greener reshaping of the international law and a renewed multilateralism.
Moreover, it investigates whether the transformations in justice towards the greening of the legal system can serve as a prerequisite for implementing a global new International Green Order.
The project formulates transdisciplinary research questions within the nexus of environmental law and policy, climate changes and geopolitical repercussions.
To address it, the study will use a combination of document analysis, literature review, and surveys and interviews with key stakeholders.
This approach will help to evaluate the feasibility of implementing ecocide into international criminal law, its vulnerabilities, and potential geopolitical implications.
