Global governance is required to deal with transboundary problems, such as climatic changes, health pandemics, financial crises, and military conflicts.
Yet global governance is increasingly contested by authoritarian states, anti-globalist populists, and social movements.
The purpose of this initiative is to establish an internationally leading interdisciplinary research center devoted to the study of contestation in global governance: Stockholm Center on Global Governance (SCGG).
SCGG will address the over-arching question of why, how, and with what consequences global governance is contested by promoting novel interdisciplinary research on the sources, processes, and consequences of contestation.
In addition, the center will explore how this system can be enhanced in response to demands for more democratic, effective, and just global governance.
SCGG will leverage the combined expertise of internationally leading researchers in the social sciences, humanities, and law at Stockholm University. SCGG will integrate cutting-edge research, graduate training, and policy engagement within one common framework.
The establishment of SCGG will create a unique interdisciplinary environment at the international forefront and the first center for global governance research in Northern Europe.
