Application for travel grant YSSP at IIASA.Biofuels is a mitigation option to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but the production of feedstock, transport and production process can cause their own emissions as well as have impact on other sustainability factors. Policies to both encourage an economically efficient increase of production and minimize climate impact are important.
During the summer programme, I want to further develop an economic spatial optimization model over biofuel production from agricultural land.
The model already considers economic aspects of the optimal localization of biofuel production plants, and now I also add the impact on GHG emissions.
The modelling framework will be extended to cover land use changes between agricultural land and forests, in order to consider connected emissions. Further, optimal mixes of different types of policies will be analysed with help of the model. The results will be shown with a case study in Sweden. Parts of this research will be carried out beforehand at SLU as it is a part of the PhD project I belong to.
