The project aimed to provide emergency livelihood assistance to support 2010 flood-affected vulnerable farmers in Pakistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Balochistan.
The main objectives of the project were to (1) provide wheat seed packages for vulnerable households; (2) provide assistance to maintain the health and nutrition of surviving livestock in the near-term through fodder and vaccination provision; (3) provide Sorghum seed for farmers who need the crop to supplement feed for livestock and (4) provide assistance, in the form of cash for work, to stimulate community participation in the initial repair of damaged portions of the irrigation distribution system.
This action not only provides an infusion of much needed cash into affected communities, it makes it possible for irrigation water to reach planted wheat acreage by the time such irrigation is needed. In Balochistan, the program is implemented in three of the four severely flood-affected provinces covering 22 districts
