On May 15, 2007 in Beijing, Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Chinese President Hu Jintao signed an agreement for China to fund the construction of two rural primary schools in Rwanda.
These schools are located in Gatsibo and Rulindo districts and they are worth 1.2 billion RWF total, 600 million RWF each. The construction of the school in Gatsibo included nine class room blocks.
It sought reduce the commuting distance for 600 children -- who had been traveling about five kilometers to school -- to no more than 3 km.
The Rulindo school project (also known as Inyange Girls School of Science) involved construction of a 115 meter tarmac road that connects the school to Kigali-Musanze highway, construction of the school, the provision of equipment for a computer lab, the provision of textbooks and sports equipment, and the provision of two volunteers who provided Chinese language construction.
China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) was the contractor responsible for the construction of the schools. Loan applications and disbursements are still being received and processed as the projects continue to evolve. Ongoing monitoring and evaluation are in place to ensure project continuity.
