The science objective of the proposal is twofold: (1) to adapt the state of the art numerical techniques being used in the field of holography to tackle more complex systems in equilibrium than before; and (2) to augment these methods by adopting state of the art techniques in numerical relativity to tackle much more complicated dynamical systems out of equilibrium.
Objective 1 will be achieved by using the spectral and relaxation methods, currently implemented by the host in their local computing cluster, to study the effects of periodic and random potentials as well as thermal perturbations and quenches on the transport properties of holographic strange metals.
Objective 2 will be achieved by studying vortex dynamics and collisions in holographic superfluids implementing recent advancements in numerical relativity that have been used to revolutionize the simulation of black hole collisions. The proposal is relevant to the Work Program in several key aspects.
By the nature of the topic of holography, this proposal will foster strong inter-disciplinary collaboration between the string theory and condensed matter communities as well as strong cooperation within the institutes in the Delta ITP (Amsterdam, Leiden, and Utrecht).
It will also foster strong international cooperation, particularly within Europe, given the strong links of the experienced researcher with high-energy and condensed matter research groups particularly in Germany, Denmark, and Sweden.
Finally, it will equip the experienced researcher with the ability to implement numerical methods on a large scale and on computing clusters, which is a skill that is readily transferable to any sector of quantitative work.
This will ensure that the researcher leaves the program with an extremely competitive and compelling skillset to enter the job market, whether it be in academia, industry, finance, or any other quantitative field.
