Grant Description

The Rubin Observatory is a new 8 metre telescope that will map almost half the area of the night sky to unprecedented depth. An international collaboration will use these maps to explore some of the most mysterious forces in our Universe. One, "Dark Matter", seems to be making galaxies cluster and holding them together.

The other, "Dark Energy" seems to be accelerating the entire Universe apart.

Unravelling the true nature of these phenomena requires tracing their behaviour in detail, and understanding how they have change, if at all, through time.

This project uses data from Rubin to try and answer these questions, but to do so we need powerful methods and tools for comparing its observations to data. We will develop these methods, using machine learning techniques to make the most out of this exciting new data.
