Grant Description

The goal of this sabbatical project is to publish previously unedited primary sources in ancient Greek: a corpus of 700+ anecdotes originating in Hellenistic times, and a treatise on Byzantine interest in Thomas of Aquinas.

It will result in three books: an edition of the anecdotes with translation and commentary; an edition of the treatise with analytical introduction; an annotated English translation of the treatise with a general introduction.

Thus there are two partial projects over two 6 month periods, including a 3 month stay at Harvard and Harvard-based research centers in Washington DC. Both projects are the fruit of my many years of research into the relevant manuscripts and literature. Both are at an advanced stage but each requires some months of intense, concentrated work for completion.

Both projects have been a scholarly desideratum for over a century, although there are now few specialists with the required skills and perseverance. These editions will become standard for scholars for a long time to come.

The particular content of the Greek texts means that the three books will contribute to research in classics, theology, history of ideas and of literature. The books are to be published by well known academic publishers in the US, Belgium and England.
