FTI, the Packaging and Newspaper Collection is responsible for the recycling stations in Sweden's municipalities.
They ensure that the containers are emptied, that the contents get to the right place in the handling chain, that the material is recycled as much as possible and that it is cleaned and tidy at the recycling stations.
When recycled materials end up in the wrong place, it causes major problems leading to increased energy use in the handling chain.
The project's goal is to reduce energy use in connection with material collection which in turn can provide energy gains in the second stage of the packaging life cycle.
This is achieved with more efficient handling which means that people recycle more, sort correctly and not leave the wrong material at the recycling stations. The project intends to work with these issues through the design process with service / product development.
