Additive Manufacturing (AM) and enhanced Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) are two innovative materials technologies under development worldwide that are expected to bring huge benefits for current and future nuclear power reactors. Despite encompassing very different types of materials and manufacturing technologies, they both share a common need for extensive verification prior to full-scale deployment in today’s light water reactors (LWRs) as well as in future reactors including small modular reactors (SMRs) where they are expected to play a key role.
This Advanced Materials Technology Verification for Implementation in Nuclear Energy (AMTVINE) project is a framework for several work packages targeting specific aspects of the verification of AM stainless steels and coated claddings during normal operation in LWRs. The project includes unique examination and testing of first-of-a-kind fuel materials after operation in LWRs.
