Hydrogen turbines play an important role in the energy transition to balance wind and solar. The transition speed is increasing with requests for hydrogen turbines from several countries. The German state is financing a large number of fossil-free balancing plants that require turbines on 100% H2, something currently not available on the market.
Although Swedish burner technology is at the forefront, it is a major challenge to reach 100% due to H2 properties combined with the very complex combustion chamber environment.
The project entails an accelerated development with aim to reach sufficient maturity to enable long-term operation in a customer plant including design and manufacturing of 3D-printed burners and combustion tests where performance and technology maturity are gradually increased.
By being first out commercializing hydrogen turbines, Sweden can take a leading position, driving the global energy transition.
