Business development on technology for detection of ice and snow on wind turbines

Pileus is a newly started company that aims to take new technology from Luleå University of Technology, regarding ice detection and forecast for ice formation on wind turbines, to the market. The technology has been validated under field lab forms and has proven to be superior to other technology available today. Being able to detect with very high accuracy and timing when ice begins to accumulate on wind turbines and being able to provide a forecast of what the risk looks like for the next 24 hours provides very great benefits for wind power producers both in terms of electricity production, safety and pricing linked to the common electricity market, Nord Pool.

The Swedish Energy Agency has previously financed the development and initial testing of the technology together with Vattenfall AB. Pileus' technology is based on a combination of image analysis and AI, which has proven to be a very successful way to identify the risk of accumulation of snow and ice on wind power turbines
