We have shown in laboratory environment that it is beneficial to power a roaster with wood pellets and recycled coffee husks ,and thus make the process 100% CO2 neutral and circular. We believe that knowledge about mixed fuels is central to future bioenergy and see here an application with good potential to contribute to the UN´s global objective; approx. 10 million tonnes of coffee are roasted annually and the trend is increasing.
With existing technology, it generates about 1 million tons of CO2 from fossile gas. From an economic point of view, the customer value is great, the energy consumption and the cost of the energy is reduced compared to a traditional gas-powered roaster, and waste management is eliminated. The market is large with over three thousand potential customers in the EU alone.
The activities under this project are concentrated around three main areas; testing in operational environment, documentation of sustainability performance and market preparations.
