Transport efficient centers for management of excavated soils

The project aims to produce planning and decision support for a more transport efficient management of rock and soil materials.

As metropolitan areas grow, building and construction logistics are planned and operationalized for efficient transport flows. Construction logistics setups have become established ways to increase construction transport efficiency.

However, even though masses (soil, gravel, stone and sand) accounts for 25% of construction transports they are not included in the established construction logistics solutions.

One solution for resource-efficient excavated masses is mass logistics centers (MLC) where masses are sorted, upgraded and reused as filling masses.

Technical solutions for MLC are available at pilot stage, but knowledge of suitable business models and developed transport solutions is lacking.

The result of the project will lead to investigations of 3 joint MLC (Ostlänken and in Uppsala) which can reduce energy use and climate impact by about 50%.
