The purpose is to acquire new knowledge and new skills that can form the basis for decisions to develop new, more efficient products of the class electric propulsion units. The core of this ambition is Hagnesia's innovative electric motor technology together with Kongsberg Maritime Sweden AB's many years of experience in developing and manufacturing electric propulsion units.
The work laying the grounds for this application established that Hagnesia's motor has the potential to improve efficiency by at least 1% for a unit of approx. 5 MW and at the same time achieve a reduction in the hydrodynamic cross - sectional area of ??the propulsion unit. For a hybrid vessel with a rated power of 10 MW, this corresponds to an annual reduction in fuel consumption of around 273,000 liters.
If the fuel is fossil-based diesel, emissions are reduced by about 730,000 kg CO2 per year. For battery vessels, the result is about 2-3% fewer batteries and lower vessel mass for the same range.
