SCA is developing process technology for conversion of lignin into advanced biofuels and other biochemicals. Possible lignin sources include black liquor from both sulfite and sulfate (kraft) pulp mills, as well as hydrolysis lignin or lignin from annual crops, such as straw.
The purpose of this project is to develop the technology further in order to enable production of renewable diesel, gasoline and biojet of highest quality in large scale. SCA’s ambition is to commercialize the technology and make it available to other companies in the future. Apart from contributing to the reduction of imported fossil crude oil, and thereby stimulate the transition in the transport sector, the technology will also create new jobs in the forest industry. Furthermore, this development allows for improved energy efficiency and productivity in pulp mills.
By producing premium products from black liquor, residue from pulp mills, Swedish renewable resources are utilized more efficiently.
