A new type of electric machine has recently been invented by Anders Hagnestål. The machine uses the same type of materials as standard machines but works in a different way. It can be used both as a motor and generator, and performs very well even at low speeds.
Thereby, it may have a large impact on wind power, since such a direct drive generator has the potential to become many times smaller than today’s technology and could be more low cost.
Calculations indicate that it also could reach a very high efficiency, around 99% for wind power, which is several % better than today’s technology. Thereby, the machine is predicted to reduce LCOE of e.g. onshore wind power by as much as 10%. The technical principle has been verified in an experimental setup.
In this project, a consortium from both academia and industry aims to demonstrate the extreme performance of the technology by analysis, prototype construction and experimental evaluation. A screening LCA will also be performed.
