The aim of the project is realise novel and innovative 3D battery architectures with both high energy and power densities based on coating of carbon fibres, and doing so in a fully continuous and automated way.
Carbon fibres coated with a thin polymer electrolyte, a layer of lithium metal oxide particles, or both, can then be assembled and made into a load carrying structural part – a truly multifunctional material that will save mass on systems level and also give a lower environmental impact for the application.
This opens for completely new battery architectures at macro-scale that will allow for more efficient packaging of batteries and allow for distrusted power sources reducing the need to heavy and expensive wiring. Additionally, the batteries can be very small or large opening up for a wide range of applications.
