ECOCORE: Efficiency enhancement of transformers and reactors for sustainable power system

Essential part of energy losses in power transformers and reactors appear in form of no-load losses in magnetic cores.

On global scale they reach 5% of the total electricity production creating strong environmental impact in terms of equivalent CO2 emission.

The research aims at generating new knowledge on energy losses in magnetic materials and magnetic cores as well as proposing and testing solutions for their reduction.

To reach the goal, experimental studies and computer simulations of magnetization processes in magnetic materials and large scale cores built with new design principles will be conducted.

The latter are based on the use of special arrangements of passive core elements allowing for controlling magnetic fluxes. Solutions for active flux control within the core using auxiliary windings are to be studied as well.

The project will provide knowledge and competences needed for development of efficient transformers and reactors for future sustainable electric energy system.
