The role of hydropower, to balance and deliver system services to the electric power system, will increase in the long term with more intermittent energy source. More weather dependent production demands faster and shorter frequency control. We must improve efficiency and meet future requirements for availability and operation.
Skellefteå Kraft applies for financing for the design, delivery and testing of a pilot hybrid plant to provide the new system service FFR requested by SVK. The project will verify that, through battery storage in combination with hydropower, the availability and response time for frequency control can be increased. The technology gives less wear on the turbines and an opportunity to participate in the new frequency control market, which today´s technicians do not.
The pilot is a first step in the expansion of additional facilities in our network. The pilot will not only provide the forthcoming FFR services but will also be adapted for future network services.
