If the electricity system is transformed into a predominantly renewable system, demand for bio-based balance power is expected to increase, since it is expected that biomass use will increase also in the transport sector and in industrial processes, thus increasing competition for biomass.
This project will investigate the role of biopower in a future energy system where biomass constitutes a limited resource that can be used for carbon-neutral electricity supply, heat and transport.
We use a state-of-the-art electricity system model and develop the description of the biomass resource as well as possible use of biomass, with special focus on biopower, to do an integrated system analysis.
The project focuses on Sweden, but takes into account the strong dependence on Europe as an integrated market, as well as international trade in electricity and fuels.
The project will contribute relevant knowledge for policy development as well as long-term investments in the electricity and transport
