Grant Description

This application is to support a six month scientific visit of Dr. Shira Raveh-Rubin at the Univeristy of Bern.

The visit aims to consolidate and develop scientific interactions between Shira Raveh-Rubin and Olivia Romppainen-Martius and group members.

Raveh-Rubin leads the dynamical meteorology group at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, studying atmospheric dynamics, impact and predictability of weather systems.

The climate Impacts and Mobiliar Lab for Natural Risks groups led by Romppainen-Martius at the University of Bern study atmospheric dynamics of short-term climate variation, the forecasting and statistics of high-impact weather events and the dynamics of midlatitude weather systems.Dry intrusions (DIs) are descending airstreams from the midlatitude upper troposphere into the lower troposphere in lower latitudes.

Being high-momentum, relatively cold and dry airmasses, DIs are therefore conductive for sharp frontal structures and for either the suppression or (more commonly) onset of convection and precipitation (e.g., Raveh-Rubin and Wernli 2016, Catto and Raveh-Rubin 2019).In this project we aim to examine several “convection-DI” cases in detail to outline possible lifecycles of such events that are conductive to high-impact weather.

In particular, we are interested in learning how the DI contributes to or suppresses instability by studying vertical profiles and the pathways through which DIs modify the vertical profiles (advection vs. adiabatic vs. diabatic processes).
