I propose a research mission to Japan to establish new research collaborations focused on the development of novel optical tools for imaging brain function that can record the activity of large numbers of neurons (many thousands) distributed across widespread brain areas.
This will take the form of four research visits (12 weeks in total, spread out across two years) to Japan, hosted by the University of Yamanashi and by the RIKEN Center for Brain Science, Tokyo.
These visits will enable exchange of ideas for technological innovation, the development of new research collaborations, and the submission of grant proposals to fund follow-on collaborative research.
A further aim of the mission will be to stimulate interaction between Japan and the UK in the broader area of neurotechnology, which is an area of vital strategic importance to both countries.
