Grant Description
On April 19, 2022, China International Development Cooperation Agency announced that it would provide RMB 200 million for emergency humanitarian assistance in Sri Lanka in 2022 as the country has encountered a severe economic and social crisis. On May 3, 2022, CIDCA announced that it would provide another RMB 300 million, totaling the amount to 500 million RMB.
The Chinese Government announced that it would donate 10,000 metric tons of rice through this grant commitment.
Over the span of six months between June 2022 and December 2022, the Chinese Government delivered a total of 12 batches of rice to the Government of Sri Lanka. On June 28, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered its first batch of rice (1000 tons). On July 8, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the second batch (1000 tons).
On July 16, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the third batch (500 tons) On July 20, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the fourth batch (500 tons). On July 24, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the fifth batch (1000 tons). On August 8, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the sixth batch (1000 tons).
On September 7, 2022, the Chinese embassy in Sri Lanka held an official handover ceremony for the first 5000 tons of rice. Then, on October 25, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the seventh batch (500 tons). On November 4, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the eighth batch (500 tons). On November 19, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the ninth batch (1000 tons).
On November 27, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the tenth batch (1000 tons). On December 5, 2022, the Chinese Government delivered the eleventh batch (1000 tons). The final batch was delivered on December 19, 2022 (1000 tons).
The 10,000 metric tons of rice was utilized to support the nutrition of more than 1.1 million students in 7,900 schools in Sri Lanka as a part of the country's school meal program. The total value of the 10,000 MT of rice is approximately Rs. 4.2 billion. All projects under this grant include: 1.
