On June 22, 2022, southeastern Afghanistan suffered an earthquake that killed more than 1,000 people, injured nearly 2,000 and left tens of thousands of people homeless. On June 25, 2022, the Chinese Foreign Minister committed CNY 50 million in aid. On June 27, 2022, the first batch of Chinese aid arrived in Afghanistan.
This batch included 120 tents, 320 folding beds, and more than 6,000 blankets, and was handed over to the Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority. On June 28, 2022, two Y-20 cargo planes from the Chinese air force delivered a second batch of aid to Afghanistan. A total of six Y-20 planes delivered aid to Afghanistan.
By July 2, 2022, 300 tents were being distributed in Barmal district of Paktika by the Paktika branch of Afghanistan National Disaster Management Authority. A handover ceremony was held for this donation at the Afghan National Media Information Center.
Wang Yu, the Chinese Ambassador to Afghanistan, and Guram Gus, Acting Minister of the Disaster Management Department of the Interim Government of Afghanistan, attended the ceremony and delivered speeches.
1. A Chinese diplomat, Ji Rong, claimed on X (Twitter) that the Chinese aid totaled CNY 54 million. The more conservative figure of CNY 50 million was used.
