Through the South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund (SSCAF), China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) pledged USD 5 million for the "Learning from China's Experience to Improve the Ability of Response to COVID-19 in Asia and the Pacific Region" initiative in 2021.
The goal of the project was to strengthen the preparedness and response capacity of the Philippines (Record ID# 96431), Myanmar (Record ID#96973), Cambodia (Record ID#96974), Nepal (Record ID#96975), and Laos (Record ID#96976) and share China’s successful COVID-19 strategies to promote sustainable cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region on COVID-19 response.
The total estimated cost of this initiative is USD 11.42 million with United Nations Development Program (UNDP) providing the remaining USD 6.42 million in parallel funding.
Laos received USD 679,363 under this initiative to achieve the following deliverables: - procure 2 sets of high temperature steam sterilizer equipment with integrated shredder enhanced capacities for safe medical waste management and access to information in the selected provinces/districts; - train 15 MoH staff in central, provincial and district level on the database and maintenance of the system; - train 25 MoH staff on medical waste management; - train 1 central hospital (103 hospital), 7 provincial hospitals (Xiengkhouang, Houphanh, Bolikhamxay, Xaysomboun, Phongsaly, Salavan and Attapue), and 13 district hospitals on Medical Waste Management; - train core staffs from 2 selected hospitals for operation and maintenance of the equipment.
On July 28, 2022, three high-capacity autoclaves were handed over to Setthathirath Central Hospital, Luang Namtha Provincial Hospital, and Xayaboury Provincial Hospital.
This was done in cooperation with the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism, with the technical advisory of the World Health Organization (WHO). The autoclave can treat 100-150 kilograms of waste in 30 minutes.
