Grant Description
On November 1, 2018, the Government of Tonga and the Chinese government shared an exchange of letters on the proposed RMB 87 million grant for Tonga Wind Power Project.
Hunan Electric Power Design Institute Co., LTD. began conducting a preliminary engineering survey in Tongatapu in August 2019.
The Tonga Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC) is the co-signor and will be responsible for securing land, environmental and construction permitting, site leveling, site services (water, comms etc.), temporary facilities and road access.
Tonga Power Ltd. and China Gezhouba Group Company Ltd. (CGGC) will be implementers on the project. The signing of the implementation agreement was delayed due to COVID-19.
The purpose of this project is to ease issues with electricity shortage and reduce Tonga's dependence on imported diesel power generation. The planned installed capacity is 2,250 kilowatts (2.25 MW). CGGC will install three units with a single capacity of 750 kilowatts. The annual power generation is expected to reach 361 million watt-hours.
The project construction site is located in the Rapaha area of Nuku'alofa, the capital of the Kingdom of Tonga. China Gezhouba Group Company Ltd. (CGGC) signed the construction contract in September 2020. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 7th, 2024. Tonga Power Ltd. NNUP Area 5 project team completed the High Voltage (HV) connection to the China Wind Project site in FY23-24.
The project is expected to be completed before the end of 2025.
