Grant Description

On 13 May 2004, the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) signed an agreement granting the Government of Sudan $10 million USD to construct the Merowe Bridge (also called the Merowe Friendship Bridge or the Sudanese-Chinese friendship bridge) across the Nile River towards Aswan Dam. The purpose of this grant was to finance 50% of total project costs equal to$20 million USD.

The 440-meter-long and 20-meter-wide bridge links Merowe on the eastern bank of the Nile River to Karima on the other side.

Construction of the bridge, which started in May 2004, was implemented by Jilin Province International Economic and Technical Corporation. The bridge was formally complete on 31 December 2007, and opened to traffic on 17 January 2008.
