On September 13, 2022, the Governments of China and Mozambique signed several agreements, including a Partial Debt Relief Agreement in which China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) canceled RMB 50 million (approximately EUR 7 million) of Mozambique’s debt, stemming from an interest-free loan due by the end of 2021.
The signing was officiated by China's Ambassador to Mozambique, Wang Hejun, and Mozambique's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Verónica Macamo.
Additionally, agreements for economic and technical cooperation and humanitarian food assistance were concluded, with China donating about EUR 13.9 million through the ETCA.
Minister Macamo highlighted the significance of these agreements in enhancing Mozambique's public finance management and fostering social and economic development, praising China's role in supporting Mozambique's sustainable development efforts.
1. This record is marked as an umbrella record because the (canceled) interest-free loan in question was likely contracted after 2000, presenting a double-counting risk.
