On March 23, 2021, the Chinese Government and the Government of Mozambique signed a debt forgiveness agreement.
The agreement was signed by China's Ambassador to Mozambique, Wang Hejum, and Mozambique's Foreign Affairs and Co-operation Minister, Verónica Macamo.
China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) agreed to agreed to cancel RMB 244.6 million ($37.5 million) of the Government of Mozambique’s outstanding debt obligations. These obligations resulted from three interest-free loans that the Government of Mozambique previously contracted.
1. This record is marked as an umbrella record because the (cancelled) interest-free loans in question were likely contracted after calendar year 2000, which presents a risk of double-counting.
