Grant Description

On January 25, 2021, the Chinese Government and the Government of Burundi signed a debt forgiveness agreement.

China’s Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) agreed to cancel RMB 50 million of the Government of Burundi’s outstanding debt obligations.

These obligations resulted from an interest-free loan (with a final maturity date of December 31, 2020) that the Government of Burundi contracted — through an Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ECTA) — on August 21, 2009 (captured via Record ID#12303).

📋 Staff Comments

1. This record is marked as an umbrella record because the interest-free loan was contracted after calendar year 2000, which presents a risk of double-counting.
