On March 23, 2020, the Costa Rican Foreign Ministry announced that the Chinese government would donate COVID-19 testing kits to Costa Rica, which were expected would arrive within the next few days.
Then, on March 30, 2020, the Chinese Embassy in San José handed over the donation to the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social, CCSS). More specifically, 2,500 PCR testing kits manufactured by the BGI Group were donated. The donation was to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic in Costa Rica.
A donation from the Jack Ma and Alibaba foundations - which included medical supplies such as surgical masks, additional test kits, and five continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines - was announced along with this donation on March 23rd. It arrived on April 3, 2020.
